What to wear to a UK autumn wedding as a guest

An autumn wedding can move from a cold journey to a warm ceremony and then a damp walk across a venue. Choose an outfit that works through the day, with an outer layer that still feels part of the look.

In this guide
Start with the invitation and venue
Check the dress code, ceremony time and whether the reception is indoors or on grass and gravel. A midi dress, tailored jumpsuit or well-cut separates can all work; the best choice is one you can sit, dance and travel in comfortably. Respect any specific requests from the couple.
Pick an outfit you can rewear
Burgundy, navy, teal and rich green work with many autumn coats. If you already own a dress you like, try changing its jacket, shoes or jewellery before buying a replacement. A tailored trouser and blouse combination can also be restyled for work or another event.
Make the coat part of the plan
Try your coat over the complete outfit in daylight. A long plain coat can make a printed dress or colourful jumpsuit feel calm; a cropped jacket can suit a full skirt if the proportions look right. Test how the fabric behaves when the coat is buttoned and when you carry a bag.
Choose shoes for the ground
Block heels or dressy flats may be easier on wet paving and lawns than slim heels. If you travel in boots, pack your occasion shoes and a small bag for the changeover. Bring an umbrella if the venue has outdoor photographs, but keep your hands free for the arrival.
