Five outfits from one pair of trousers

Start with a pair that feels good sitting, walking and standing. Straight or gently wide-leg trousers in navy, charcoal or black give you plenty of options without buying a new outfit for each day.

1. The workday

Add a shirt in cotton or a soft drapey fabric, loafers and a belt. Leave the collar open and roll the cuffs if a formal shirt feels too stiff.

2. The easy weekend

Wear a plain T-shirt, trainers and a lightweight jacket. Keep the top fitted or tuck a small section at the front to balance wider trousers.

3. Dinner out

Swap the day top for a satin or textured blouse. Add one piece of jewellery you enjoy wearing and shoes you can comfortably walk in.

4. A mixed-culture look

Try a shorter kurta or tunic with the same trousers. Check that the hem and trouser width work together; a side-slit kurta can create a graceful line.

5. The cooler day

Layer a fine knit under a structured coat. Match the knit and trousers for an uninterrupted base, then bring colour through a scarf.

Before you buy: Lay out the tops and shoes you already own. If the trousers work with at least three, you have a more useful purchase than an outfit worn once.

Examples to compare in shops

If you need a new base, compare M&S Pure Cotton Wide Leg Trousers with UNIQLO Smart Ankle Trousers. The first is wide leg and the second ankle length; check the measurements against trousers you already like.
