Where to find versatile trousers and tops in the UK

Good basics earn their space by working with clothes you already own. Start with a trouser shape you enjoy wearing, then decide which top fills an actual gap.

Start with the fit, not a brand

Check how trousers feel sitting, walking and bending. Try the shoes you wear most often, then look at the hem in a full-length mirror. For a softly structured silhouette, compare M&S Pure Cotton Wide Leg Trousers with UNIQLO Smart Ankle Trousers. They serve different proportions: the first gives a wider line, while the second offers a tidier ankle length. Neither is universally more flattering; your preferred length and fabric matter.

Make one shirt do more

An easy white shirt works with navy trousers, denim and a short kurta layered over or beneath it. The M&S Autograph Pure Cotton Collared Relaxed Shirt is one concrete example to compare with a shirt you already own. Check whether the shoulders sit comfortably and whether the fabric needs ironing more often than you are willing to do.

Add a simple layer

The UNIQLO AIRism Cotton T-Shirt offers a plain base beneath a blazer or cardigan. Before buying, compare neckline, opacity and length with your usual trousers. A slightly shorter hem can be easier to leave untucked under a longer coat.

A useful three-outfit test

Put a potential new item beside three pieces from your wardrobe. Can the trousers work with your white shirt, a knit and a kurta? Does the shirt work open over a tee, tucked into trousers and under a jacket? If the combinations only exist in your imagination, pause before ordering.

These are shopping examples, not hands-on reviews. Sizes, colours and stock change. Check the retailer’s current product details and return policy before ordering.
