Rainy day work outfits that still feel put together

A rainy commute changes an outfit more than a new trend does. Plan around the journey first, then choose an office layer that is easy to take off when you arrive.

Use one reliable outer layer

A rain-resistant coat with room for a fine knit is often more useful than a heavy coat that stays damp. Check the care label, hood or umbrella coverage, pocket depth and how the hem sits over your trousers. A navy or dark neutral coat can work over brighter tops without limiting your wardrobe.

Keep the base simple

Pair straight or gently wide trousers with a lightweight knit and shirt, or wear a practical dress with tights. If wide hems touch the ground, consider a shorter trouser on wet days. Try the complete outfit with your work bag so you can see whether the coat hangs comfortably.

Consider two pairs of shoes

Walking shoes or ankle boots with grip can handle paving and puddles. If your workplace calls for something different, carry loafers or smart flats to change into. Dry wet shoes fully before wearing them again and follow their care guidance.

Build a repeatable three-piece formula

Pick one outer layer, one dependable bottom and two or three tops that all work together. A navy coat, charcoal trousers and cream or teal knit cover several workdays without looking identical. A scarf adds warmth and can be removed when the office is hot.
